Platform Tennis

If you live in a climate where it snows a lot but you really love playing a game of tennis then you should look into platform tennis. Platform tennis is played on a raised court similar to doubles tennis only the court is surrounded by wired mesh walls. Playing platform tennis in the winter will keep you with the opportunity to play tennis all year round. Platform tennis is one of the only sports that is played outside in the winter besides such sports as skiing or snowboarding. If you live near a country club you will find many opportunities to play platform tennis especially if you live in Greenwich where one of the first platform tennis courts was planned and brought in to function.

Platform tennis shoes and equipment is very similar to the current tennis equipment and shoes that we are used to for summer play. You do want to make sure that your platform tennis shoes will give you great support since your ankles will be colder and are more likely to be injured. Some of the platform tennis courts out there are constructed with a warming bay nearby so that you can heat up in between game play. However, if you get in to you in a really aggressive game of platform tennis then you may already be hot enough.

Platform tennis court construction has changed over the years and the top-rated platform rackets and arenas will reflect that. Platform tennis courts have sand added to paint so that there is better traction on the floor of the platform. Platform tennis rackets are also a bit stronger because you can use your tennis racquet to smack the ball out of the wire mesh surrounding walls if the ball gets stuck and back into play and that is still considered a good play.

To learn more about platform tennis you should go down to your local country club. Although platform tennis has declined in popularity since it began some 80 years ago you will still be able to find quite a few courts in the north east and the middle of the country. If there is no platform tennis court near you that maybe you should think about building one and starting your own country club. You should never let anything stand in the way of playing your favorite sport. Remember, if you build it they will come.
